Senior IP Strategist
Thomas Ewing is a utility player in the IP field. He draws on a firm grasp of the fundamentals of economics, management and law to counsel clients ranging from established companies to inventors of disruptive technologies, universities to governments and developing-world to first-world investors. From his 25 years as a commercial lawyer, registered patent attorney and IP counsellor, he has a keen sense for the many ways in which intellectual assets may be created and used.
Mr Ewing has developed IP strategies and assisted hundreds of clients with IP matters, ranging from high-net worth investors to venture capital firms. He has assisted clients of all sizes, including start-up firms with disruptive technologies facing intense competition.
He has advised governments and international agencies on IP strategy matters. Mr Ewing has testified before the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission and assisted attorneys from the US Senate Judiciary Committee. He assisted the Swedish government’s innovation agency Vinnova. He developed a patent agent training programme for the WIPO, which has been translated into eight languages and used in courses worldwide. He has personally trained patent agents from 45 countries and has similarly developed an IP valuation training course for the WIPO.
Mr Ewing has taught semester-long IP-related graduate and undergraduate courses at universities worldwide. His academic publications, such as The Giants Among Us and Indirect Exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights by Corporations and Investors (coining the term ‘patent privateering’), have been widely cited in academic literature.
Having served as vice president of a software firm, he understands the intersection of management, business and intellectual assets. As a former researcher at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mr Ewing understands invention and technology development from its core beginnings.
Mr Ewing holds six degrees, including a JD in law, a licentiate in industrial management and economics, an ME and BEng in engineering, and an MA and BA in literature. He is presently completing a PhD in industrial management and economics focusing on intellectual assets.
