Senior IP Strategist
at AWA Strategy
Thomas Ewing is a utility player in the IP field. He draws on a firm grasp of the fundamentals of IP theory to counsel clients ranging from established companies to inventors of disruptive technologies, universities to governments and developing-world to first-world investors. He has a keen sense for the variety of ways in which intellectual property may be created and used from his 25 years as a commercial lawyer, registered patent attorney and IP counsellor.
Mr Ewing has developed IP strategies and assisted hundreds of clients with IP matters, ranging from high-net worth investors to venture capital firms such as Kleiner Perkins. He has assisted clients of all sizes, including start-up firms with disruptive technologies facing intense competition from larger, entrenched incumbents.
He has advised governments and international agencies on IP strategy matters. Mr Ewing has testified before the US Department of Justice and the Fair Trade Commission and assisted attorneys from the US Senate Judiciary Committee. He assisted the Swedish government’s innovation agency Vinnova and supported the Tanzanian government’s creation of a national IP plan. He developed a patent agent training programme for the WIPO, which has been translated into eight languages and used in courses worldwide. He has personally trained patent agents from 45 countries. He has similarly developed an IP valuation training course for WIPO.
Mr Ewing has taught semester-long IP-related graduate and undergraduate courses at universities worldwide. His academic publications, such as “The Giants Among Us” and “Indirect Exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights by Corporations and Investors” (coining the term ‘patent privateering’), have been widely cited in academic literature.
Having served as an in-house attorney he understands the intersection of management, business and intellectual property. As a former researcher at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mr Ewing understands invention and technology development from its core beginnings.
Mr Ewing holds six degrees, including a JD in law, a licentiate in industrial management and economics, an ME and BEng in engineering, and an MA and BA in literature.
