Director, IP Division at MediaTek Inc
Steven Yen-Hsien Liu joined MediaTek in 2014 as director of the IP division, responsible for all aspects of intellectual property.
MediaTek’s achievements under his leadership are well recognised. In 2017 IAM named MediaTek one of its Asia IP Elite for the fifth consecutive year, and recognised it as Asian Company of the Year in the semiconductor category. In 2016 MediaTek was recognised as one of the Top 100 Global Innovators for the third consecutive year by Thomson Reuters (now Clarivate), a first among Taiwan-based companies.
Before MediaTek, Mr Liu spent more than 10 years at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd (TSMC) in Hsinchu in a variety of roles, including managing IP litigation and licensing, patent acquisition and sale, as well as commercial contract negotiation. As a senior business counsel, Mr Liu spent a year in Amsterdam with TSMC Europe BV as its first onsite legal counsel. Before moving to Taiwan, Mr Liu practised patent litigation in the New York office of Fish & Neave.
Mr Liu co-chairs the IP committee of the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA) and has acted as a TSIA delegate and adviser in international meetings for more than 10 years. He speaks frequently on IP issues.
Mr Liu received his JD from George Washington University Law School and his BA from Columbia University. Mr Liu is a member of the New York Bar and is registered to practise before the US Patent and Trademark Office as a patent attorney.
