Partner at Kilburn & Strode LLP
Richard Howson is the managing partner of Kilburn & Strode LLP. His patent practice focuses on the mechanical and electrical fields and he has particular experience in the automotive and aerospace sectors. His automotive expertise lies in powertrains, engine control and hybrid vehicles, including the design of electrical machines for hybrid applications. His aerospace experience takes in mechanical systems, electrical systems and manufacturing technology, usually in commercial aeroplane applications, but also in spaceflight applications.
Mr Howson is well known for his ability to work with in-house teams to manage major portfolios. He handles some of Kilburn & Strode’s main clients, including aerospace giant Boeing and smart-meter multinational Itron. He also works alongside his colleagues to handle the significant IP portfolio of Imperial Innovations – the technology transfer arm of Imperial College London. In addition to portfolio management, he specialises in European Patent Office (EPO) opposition and appeal work. An example of his strength in this area is the work he has done advising Boeing in its ongoing EPO opposition war with Airbus.
A recent work highlight for Mr Howson was overseeing the worldwide filing for longstanding client and green energy company Ecotricity’s Sky Diamond technology. This is a way of combining carbon capture from the atmosphere, green electricity generation and synthetic diamond production to give the world’s ‘greenest’ diamonds. Another significant client in the clean tech sector is Magnomatics – a UK-based developer of future drive systems for hybrid vehicles who use super high-efficiency magnetic gears, rather than conventional mechanical ones.
Mr Howson regularly speaks on patent-related topics in the United States and Europe. He has global insight, meaning he can confidently provide an international perspective on strategising intellectual property.
