Niklas Östman is specialised in technology and IP strategy, transactions and litigation. He has a unique understanding of IP and technology commercialisation projects, which he gained while working in prominent in-house businesses in both the European Union and the United States.
Prior to re-joining Roschier, Attorneys Ltd, Mr Östman was general manager of IP licensing at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. Before that, he was head of patent licensing at Nokia Corporation. He has also worked as a visiting lawyer at Quinn Emanuel, a leading US litigation firm.
Mr Östman has played a key role in creating and operating two IP monetisation programmes that rank among the top three in the world. Through this work, he has negotiated (or otherwise played a key role in) licensing deals and brought in more than €18 billion in profit. In this capacity, he has negotiated complex IP and technology transactions with virtually all major car, software, consumer electronics and telecom companies in the United States, Europe and Asia.
On the technology side, Mr Östman has broad experience in both the cellular (handsets and infrastructure) and software (on-premise and cloud applications) industries. He has also worked extensively for the automotive industry.
Mr Östman has been deeply involved in hundreds of patent lawsuits across the European Union, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Kenya and China. He has led several global patent wars, the largest of which involved up to 970 external lawyers.
He has acted as a trial counsel in patent cases in Finland, obtaining landmark decisions on issues such as equivalence, the availability of preliminary injunctions and patents for biochemical synthesis routes. He has also acted as an arbitrator in technology disputes.
Mr Östman is a member of Licensing Executives Society Scandinavia’s Nominating Committee and is active within several other professional organisations. Based in Finland, he is fluent in English, Finnish and Swedish.
