Nigel King is Senior Counsel and Head of Intellectual Property at Standard Chartered, a leading international bank in over 60 markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He is an experienced IP lawyer and patent attorney with international experience in multinationals and private practice in Asia, Europe and Australasia.
In recent years, Standard Chartered has been reinventing banking by embracing innovation and digitisation across its footprint. As a result, Mr King has led the formulation of Standard Chartered’s IP technology strategy and is responsible for its patent strategy, advising on IP ownership and licensing arrangements for intra-group and joint venture structures, and conducting IP due diligence projects for material acquisitions and divestments. He deals with the full range of fintech related technologies including AI, machine learning, DLT and blockchain, digital financial assets, and encryption technologies.
He also has significant experience in trademark litigation and is recognised in the WTR 300 listings for 2019 and 2020. He is responsible for Standard Chartered’s global trademark portfolio and brand protection strategy, which were realigned in light of its recent global brand refresh. He is deeply involved with Standard Chartered’s global sports sponsorship portfolio by providing IP and sports law advice including renegotiating its sponsorship with the Liverpool Football Club as Main Club Sponsor, and supporting Standard Chartered’s portfolio of city marathons in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
He is admitted to practise as a solicitor in New Zealand and Australia. He also has qualified as a patent attorney in New Zealand and Australia, initially practising in the field of pharmaceutical and biotechnology inventions.
