Head of Intellectual Property at Tata Steel Ltd
Munish Sudan heads the IP function of Tata Steel and manages patent, copyright and design portfolios. He is also responsible for managing IP ownership, licensing, confidentiality, funding and other contractual aspects of research and technology collaborations. Mr Sudan is a member of the Innovation Council and works with researchers to assess and convert ideas into new products and technologies. He has led Tata Steel to win a number of coveted and prestigious awards, including the Thomson Reuters Innovation Award 2015, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Intellectual Property Award and the Tata Innovista Award in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
Before joining Tata Steel, Mr Sudan was group manager at Evalueserve and headed a multi-lingual team of more than 60 team members providing IP asset management and technology research and strategy solutions to Fortune 100 companies in the energy and chemical domains. He has managed a number of open innovation programmes to identify potential partners and subsequently, develop strategic alliances in the domain of personal care, photovoltaics and lithium ion batteries.
During his professional career spanning more than a decade, he has counselled on issues surrounding mergers and acquisitions, valuation of technologies, joint venture structuring, licensing and assessment of technological breakthroughs. He speaks frequently at various national and international conferences (eg, the CII, WIPO, Managing Intellectual Property, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). His specialisation areas include technology scouting, technology intelligence, open innovation, patent drafting, IP licensing and developing strategic alliances.
He is a licensed patent attorney before the Indian Patent Office and holds a postgraduate diploma in IP law from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research. He is also a certified licensing professional and a graduate in business management from XLRI Jamshedpur, specialising in strategy and marketing. Mr Sudan also completed a master’s in chemistry from IIT Roorkee. He has been acknowledged as a leading IP counsel at various forums over the course of his professional career. He also teaches intellectual property and innovation management at a number of leading business schools and research institutes.
