Chief Executive Officer
at Innovative Foundations
Matthew Wahlrab is founder and CEO of Innovative Foundations, a multinational company that serves as the trusted force multiplier for accelerating, protecting and leveraging innovation for competitive advantage.
Mr Wahlrab’s 20-plus year career has spanned every aspect of identifying, evaluating and cultivating competitive advantage to substantiate venture capital investment and support corporate planning to achieve return on investment for multinationals and enterprises with global ambitions.
Mr Wahlrab’s unique background in business development, R&D, start-ups, venture capital and organisational behaviour has helped him to pioneer new processes for cultivating patent portfolios worthy of the products, services and competitive advantages that they protect. This expertise is evident in his four-part process for assessing competitive advantage. The process – proven by its adoption by some of the largest multinationals in the aerospace, software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider and mining industries – fosters cross-enterprise discussion by blending internal and external analysis from a technical, market, intellectual property and business-needs perspective. This multidisciplined approach – captured in Innovative Foundations’ proprietary software – serves as a guide for building, buying, partnering or monitoring decisions. The reports serve as the basis for evaluating equity investments from venture capital and corporate venture capital, full-cycle M&A activities, open innovation and aligning R&D efforts with business strategy.
Mr Wahlrab has focused his practice on corporate venture capital formation and execution, market development for innovation, open innovation, strategic collaboration partnerships, M&A exit strategy planning and execution, commercialising innovation and patent portfolio development.
Mr Wahlrab has been recognised by the IAM 300 three times and has won the President’s Award. His accomplishments include successfully exiting his electrical engineering firm, co-authoring Exit Workbook (a guide for exit planning for start-ups) and being a Keiretsu Capital exit adviser. Mr Wahlrab has placed more than $100 million in investment capital, sold more than 2,000 patent assets and negotiated more than $60 million in new licensing revenue. He has overseen the planning and implementation of several new licensing, tech transfer and open innovation departments for some of the world’s most respected companies.
Matthew Wahlrab is an “experienced business leader” who “does much to promote IP education”. “He is very effective at executing novel licensing models” and a thought leader in the emerging companies space.
