Masaki Kataoka has substantial international experience and exposure. He joined LIXIL in 2018 and is the leader and head of the IP division. He is responsible for all IP matters involving LIXIL group companies and third parties, including establishing the IP strategy and supervising the implementation of concrete operations under the IP strategy, ranging from filing, global IP portfolio management, offensive and defensive IP licensing, IP administration and dealing with counterfeit product issues. Mr Kataoka enhances close collaboration with business and R&D teams to ensure that the IP strategy is integrated into and aligned with their strategies. The IP team works globally and closely with various stakeholders, especially in Japan, China, Germany, the United States and South Africa.
Before joining LIXIL, Mr Kataoka worked at Sony HQ’s IP division in 2006, He served as a patent portfolio manager in the IP strategy and licensing department of Sony Europe Limited from 2010 to 2013 and as an associate director in the IP department of Sony Corporation of America from 2013 to 2017. During his time at Sony, Mr Kataoka was primarily responsible for IP matters, including patent portfolio management for wireless communication standards, offensive and defensive patent licensing, patent litigation, IP-centric joint ventures, patent transactions (eg, acquisitions and divestitures) and business developments leveraging IP portfolios.
Mr Kataoka has a master’s in electrical engineering. He has been a member of the Japan Patent Attorney Association since 2008.
