Managing Director at China IP Exchange, LLC
John P Carney is the managing director of China IP Exchange, LLC (IPX), which he founded to continue his successful career of providing advanced automotive components and systems to the China market. In this role, he works with clients in China to identify and conclude deals for western technology required for the rapidly evolving Chinese automotive market. This consultancy focuses on bringing proven product designs and related manufacturing processes to capable firms in China.
Mr Carney founded China IPX following a 40-year career with Aptiv/Delphi, where he directed licensing activities from 2012 to 2018. At Aptiv/Delphi, he brought a strong commercial focus to the company’s licensing and IP monetisation efforts. Further, his team concluded 60 deals with an emphasis on transferring vehicle electrification technologies to the Chinese supply base. Those efforts saw him make more than 30 trips to China, during which time he was able to establish an extensive network in the Chinese M&A and automotive supply communities.
Prior to licensing, Mr Carney served as a deal director for the divestiture activities, selling non-core businesses as part of Delphi’s Chapter 11 restructuring. In that role, he completed four successful business sales involving various segments of the Chassis product line sold to major international automotive suppliers.
Mr Carney’s work as a deal director followed positions in programme management, sales and customer support for key original equipment manufacturer supply accounts, primarily involving Chassis products.
Mr Carney has an MBA and a BA in accounting from Indiana University and is a certified licensing professional.
Mr Carney has been active in the Licensing Executives Society since 2009 and currently chairs the Automotive and Aerospace Committee for the high-tech sector. His work with the automotive and aerospace group has focused on IP matters resulting from integrating advanced control and communications technologies from other markets into next-generation vehicle design. Under his leadership, the committee has sponsored webinars and industry panels on IP matters connected to vehicle-to-vehicle communication, autonomous driving vehicles and advanced telecoms.
