Johanna Dwyer

Chief Executive Officer at QipWorks

Johanna Dwyer is an IP and technology strategy specialist with over 20 years’ experience leading intellectual property, research, development and innovation. She is the founder and CEO of QipWorks, a full-service IP business that partners with technology companies, innovators and investors to build, manage and utilise IP portfolios. QipWorks believes that IP strategy must support and align with business strategy so that each patent has a clear purpose. It provides extensive expertise in patent portfolio development and an intimate understanding of the rigour required at all stages of the innovation and patent lifecycle.

Before creating QipWorks, Ms Dwyer founded the Innovation Lab for Saudi Aramco, where she developed IP strategy and management processes and supported the creation of three research labs in the United States. She advised Aramco’s venture capital funds on their portfolio companies with respect to valuations and IP strategy, built collaborative engagements between universities and large companies and developed technology commercialisation strategies. As general manager of Federated Wireless a spectrum sharing company Ms Dwyer created a growth-oriented business and technology strategy, executed a turnaround and positioned the company for success in a new market segment. She spent 12 years at BlackBerry, originally as a radio and wireless systems expert, and later recruiting and leading a global team responsible for setting the direction of next-generation industry standards for mobile communications. She developed, articulated and operationalised IP processes for identifying, evaluating, managing, validating and monetising investments in intellectual property and built programmes to progress these assets towards licensing and commercialisation opportunities.

Ms Dwyer holds an MBA (Sloan Fellow) in innovation and global leadership from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, holds degrees in applied mathematics, mechanical engineering and electronics, is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and serves on the board of editors for Research-Technology Management.
