Legal Director, Global Patents at Google Inc
Jeremiah Chan is legal director of Google’s global patents department, leading an international team that is responsible for the strategic development of Google’s worldwide patent portfolio, quality assurance and data science. Google’s patent portfolio has received numerous accolades and has been recognised as one of the strongest portfolios in the world (IAM’s US Patent 100, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Patent Power Rankings and Thomson Reuters Global Innovator Award).
Before joining Google, Mr Chan served as head of intellectual property at JDSU – a global supplier of broadband and optical solutions – where he managed a department that was responsible for all patent, trade secret, trademark and copyright issues, including portfolio development, litigation, licensing and technology transactions. Before JDSU, Mr Chan was in private practice at Fish & Neave, where he specialised in litigation, opinion work and client counselling.
Mr Chan is recognised as a thought leader in the IP industry, sharing innovative approaches that challenge the status quo. In recent years, he has been a strong advocate for greater application of data analytics in the legal industry. He established one of the first true data science organisations in a corporate legal department and has published articles on the need for a data-driven culture in legal practice.
Mr Chan serves as an advisory board member for the Santa Clara High Tech Law Institute and a board member for the Bay Area Anti-trafficking Coalition. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with highest honours and received his JD from Cornell Law School.
