Enrique Abarca has extensive experience providing transformational and disruptive change methodologies for technology portfolios in multiple industries. In addition, he advises on all aspects of intellectual property and commercial transactions, with a focus on structuring, negotiating and implementing technology transfers, licences, strategic partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. Mr Abarca is responsible for developing domestic and international IP strategies, managing technology portfolios, providing infringement and validity analysis and managing outside patent and litigation counsel.

He is a registered patent attorney with the US Patent and Trademark Office and a named inventor on multiple pending and issued patents relating to medical and oil and gas applications.

Education

Mr Abarca has a BS (mechanical engineering) and a JD from Brigham Young University, in addition to an MBA from Rice University. He is active in multiple professional organisations and frequently presents to executive, academic and professional audiences on business and legal strategy, technology commercialisation and brand management.

Academia

Mr Abarca lectures on business and legal strategies on the Rice University Jesse H Jones Graduate School of Management executive programme.

He has lectured on various legal and business topics at the University of Texas Medical School, the National University of Colombia, Arizona State University, the University of Central Florida, Albany Law School, Union College and Rensselear Polytechnic Institute.

Accomplishments

While leading current and previous IP programmes, Mr Abarca has gained the following recognitions:

  • While at Cooper Industries (now Eaton Corporation), the company was ranked Number One Innovator due to its patent portfolio (Wall Street Journal, The Patent Board) in 2011 and 2012.
  • While at Nabors Industries Ltd, the company was selected as a 2015-2016 constituent of the Ocean Tomo 300® Patent Index, which is priced and published by the NYSE. The index is objectively based on the company’s patents and publicly recognises it for its significant proprietary position garnered through its patents.
