Elisabeth Opie opened a law office in Munich, Germany, in 2014, drawing on her 20 years’ international experience in the global innovation system and dealing with international technology across various sectors, including IT, automotive, aerospace, health and energy. While holding senior legal and executive positions with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Ms Opie gained deep experience with industry, spin-offs, research organisations and government.
Ms Opie has received a number of awards in the field of international science and technology, including a business award for outstanding commercial performance as part of a global team for ground-breaking extended-wear contact lens technology; and a strategy excellence award in her role as lead counsel for the restructure of a major joint venture, which resulted in reduced complexities of joint governance while retaining strong scientific cooperation, and reintegrated capability (staff, assets and intellectual property). In 2013 Ms Opie became the inaugural Global Research Alliance Fellow.
Working in partnership with clients to further their long-term success, Ms Opie provides targeted advice on intellectual property, competition law, policy and commercial matters, informed by her in-depth knowledge and experience of global, regional and various national innovation systems. She is solutions driven, providing strategic and operational advice across a broad range of issues facing technology-centric companies. Examples include preparing and executing negotiation and licensing strategies for standardised technologies; advising a world leader on precision testing of IP aspects for new products; and representing clients regarding IP policy before standardisation bodies such as the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, ITU, DVB and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association.
Ms Opie is a qualified solicitor in Australia, England and Wales, and Ireland, and is registered with the Munich Bar Association). She hold a BA, an LLB (Hons) and a master’s both in law and in commercial law. Ms Opie is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
