Bryant Lee

Founder at Cognition IP

Bryant Lee is the founder and managing partner of Cognition IP, the first tech-enabled patent law firm. Cognition IP includes an affiliated legal technology company, Cognition IP Technology Inc, which develops AI and software tools to make patent drafting and analysis faster, more efficient and data-driven. The company is backed by the prestigious Y Combinator start-up accelerator and top-tier Silicon Valley venture capital firms.

Mr Lee advises start-ups and enterprise companies on patent portfolio development and prosecution. He uses Cognition IP’s proprietary tools to obtain new levels of productivity and efficiency. These tools automate the routine administrative tasks associated with patent law and reduce overhead while increasing consistency and speed.

Under Mr Lee’s leadership, Cognition IP pioneers the use of data-driven and AI techniques to provide clients with new insights into IP strategy. He and his team use data drawn from patent file histories to determine the best path forward using both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Through the above initiatives, Cognition IP has achieved a net promoter score of 95 compared with an industry average of 19.

Mr Lee and his work at Cognition IP have been featured by TechCrunch and Law360. He is a frequent speaker on the use of technology in patent law and has been an invited speaker for Bloomberg, Stanford Law School and Penn State Law School.

Mr Lee began his career as a patent litigator at Covington & Burling, where he represented clients including Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, AstraZeneca and Purdue Pharmaceuticals. He took three cases to trial, participated in numerous Markman hearings and briefed a successful appeal to the Federal Circuit.

Prior to his legal career, he was a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied the development and use of AI and was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and National Defence Science and Engineering Fellowship. He has written three books about patents, co-authored seven peer-reviewed scientific articles and is the inventor on 12 patents.
