Benjamin J Sodey

Benjamin J Sodey is senior corporate patent counsel for MilliporeSigma, the life science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. Mr Sodey is presently based in St Louis, Missouri.

Before joining MilliporeSigma in 2015, Mr Sodey worked at the global law firm Bryan Cave LLP (now Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner), and prior to that at a boutique IP firm. He has more than 16 years’ experience in IP law, including litigation; global patent and trademark portfolio management; licensing, transactional and due diligence matters; trade secrets; and counselling and opinions.

Mr Sodey is presently focused on genome editing technologies, particularly CRISPR/Cas. He manages MilliporeSigma’s CRISPR global patent portfolio and is deeply involved in genome editing business, media and IP strategies, including product development and patent licensing. Mr Sodey also has considerable experience in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical IP aspects. 

In addition to his IP work with MilliporeSigma, Mr Sodey is an adjunct professor of law at Saint Louis University Law School, teaching courses on patent law, patent claim drafting and infringement analysis. He also has research experience in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, as well as immunology from his time at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Mr Sodey received his JD (magna cum laude) from Syracuse University College of Law.
