Batur Oktay manages Starbucks Coffee Company’s global IP programme and leads a team of 13 lawyers, paralegals and assistants. He formed and lead the company’s IP committee, consisting of the CEO and senior executive team. Mr Oktay is counsel for the senior executive team on innovation strategy across all platforms, as well as adviser to key global businesses. Responsible for an annual budget of up to $20 million, Mr Oktay manages every aspect of the trademark programme – including strategy, clearance, prosecution, enforcement, and litigation – and oversees Starbucks’ portfolio of 24,000 trademarks. He also created the company patent programme, building a portfolio of 500 patents. He implemented a patent incentive plan and managed all patent advice, clearance, filing, prosecution and litigation. He also negotiates contracts related to innovation, manufacturing, product development and licensing.
While working at Adobe Mr Oktay managed a global team of 13 lawyers, paralegals and investigators and was responsible for an annual budget of up to $5 million. He was designated as company spokesman for IP protection, managed worldwide copyright and trademark portfolios, led the anti-piracy programme and global IP litigation, negotiated domestic and international contracts, oversaw investigations and advised on security-related concerns. Mr Oktay was also responsible for investigations into employees suspected of security breaches.
Mr Oktay also worked for Foster Pepper in the litigation practice, covering employment, commercial, securities, intellectual property, real estate and environmental issues. He was the primary litigator for the firm’s extensive opposition and cancellation proceedings before the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
