Leader, IP and Innovation Management at Daimler
Balwant Rawat leads the IP and innovation management activities for Daimler’s India business units (Mercedes-Benz R&D India, Mercedes-Benz India and Daimler India Commercial Vehicles). Before joining Daimler, he led the IP centre of excellence team at Eaton India Engineering Centre and was senior manager of the IP operations team at Evalueserve. His areas of expertise include the systematic generation of high-quality IP portfolios through structured ideation, fostering intrapreneurship and innovation culture, patent portfolio management, patent research and technology intelligence and IP strategy development.
Mr Rawat has more than 19 years’ experience in developing and implementing IP strategies across the full lifecycle of IP portfolio development and innovation management. He was recognised by senior leadership at his present and previous organisations for spearheading various initiatives for implementing structured innovation framework that helped in fostering innovation culture in R&D teams. He played a key role in improving the quantity and quality of intellectual property generated in India and in setting up a fully fledged IP office for Daimler’s India business units. At Eaton, he was recognised by the executive vice president and global chief technology officer for developing an IP asset management strategy (identifying value creation opportunities through patent to product mapping), which added great value to the organisation’s business strategy, technology roadmap and strategic plans. At Evalueserve, Mr Rawat developed innovative IP service business models and demonstrated thought leadership by authoring several white papers, developing IP training modules for patent searching, drafting and landscaping, developing new IP competencies and mentoring the operations team.
Mr Rawat has filed two US patent applications as an inventor. He frequently speaks at IP conferences and is an active member of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) National Committee on Intellectual Property. He is also a registered patent agent with the Indian Patent Office and has a BTech in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an executive MBA from IIM Indore.
