Paul Liu is the global head of intellectual property at TuSimple, a self-driving truck company based out of San Diego, California. He built the IP function at TuSimple and oversees a team of practitioners to obtain proactive, high impact and creative IP protection, such as via patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights. Under his leadership, TuSimple developed and continues to develop business-tailored global IP strategies and operations. This has resulted in, among other accomplishments, TuSimple achieving one of the largest and most impactful single origin patent portfolios among trucking-focused autonomous vehicle companies as of its initial public offering.
Before joining TuSimple, Paul worked in intellectual property and patent law in-house at Illumina and at the law firms Duane Morris and Knobbe Martens. He has over a decade of experience as a subject-matter expert for IP assets in industries ranging from autonomous vehicles to bioinformatics and in the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science technologies.
Paul is a recognised thought leader and frequent speaker on IP-related topics at professional conferences and in academia. He has taught as an adjunct professor in the areas of patent and IP law and in conjunction with the USPTO Law School clinic certification programme. He has also served as a judge in the USPTO’s national patent application drafting competition.
Paul holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a juris doctor from the University of California, Davis. He is a registered patent attorney before the USPTO and a member of the state bar of California.
