Gareth Jones is vice president at BenevolentAI, leading IP strategy and operations. He joined the company at an early stage, supporting its rapid growth and successful public market listing. BenevolentAI develops machine learning technology to reinvent drug discovery and deliver life-changing medicines. Mr Jones supports fundraising, corporate mergers and acquisitions, licensing and collaborations. He is also responsible for compliance, open source and data.

Mr Jones started his career in software engineering research and development. He has held leadership roles at multinational companies in cutting-edge technology areas. Mr Jones is an inventor of more than 20 granted patents and one of the youngest employees that IBM awarded the Master Inventor title. His IP career began at Vodafone, managing global invention harvesting.

AI technology start-up SwiftKey recruited Mr Jones in 2013. He built and scaled IP operations, defended NPE litigation and prepared the business for acquisition. He also played a key role in facilitating the sale to Microsoft in one of the largest UK tech exits of 2015/2016. He joined the Microsoft IP team and supported patent licensing, divestiture and prosecution.

Mr Jones enjoys sharing knowledge and experience with the IP community. He speaks at events, is quoted by the press and writes for magazines and books. He has also helped to shape conference agendas through advisory board participation. Mr Jones engages in external policy, directly and through tech and pharma industry trade associations.
