David Shofi is an attorney and IP strategist with more than 25 years’ experience in technology, innovation and intellectual property. He is currently general counsel at Univercells Technologies SA, a global provider of next-generation biomanufacturing technologies. At Univercells Technologies, Mr Shofi leads all activities related to IP rights, risk management and compliance, and in-house corporate transactional responsibilities, assuring future company success while navigating the constantly changing tide of regulation and legislation in the industry.
Previously as vice president, IP strategy solutions and chief IP counsel at CPA Global, Mr Shofi helped clients of all sizes to assess and identify opportunities for improvement of their IP processes. As chief IP counsel at semiconductor and life sciences company ATMI, he managed all aspects of intellectual property – strategically building the IP team and portfolio, driving an increase in over $10 million of IP income and contributing to a successful company divestiture. Mr Shofi also served as IP counsel at IBM Corporation, where – in addition to extensive patent work – he led the early development of processes and education relating to standards, open source software and IP due diligence. He worked efficiently and effectively with inventors from various parts of the business, including research, software and semiconductors, to develop and protect IBM’s most important intellectual assets. Before IBM, he was an associate at Baker Botts.
Mr Shofi has broad experience in IP and general corporate law, including patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, IP and technology licensing and transactions, due diligence, IP strategy, portfolio development/management and monetisation. Throughout his career, he has practised in the prosecution, transactional and litigation areas, and has managed various teams of IP professionals. He excels at communicating complex matters clearly – whether through education, inventor brainstorming, C-suite messaging or team collaboration. Mr Shofi obtained his law degree from Pace University School of Law and a BSc in electrical engineering from Columbia University.
