Tomas Wässingbo's Profile

Tomas Wässingbo has extensive experience working with the strategic aspects of IP, including patent strategy development and portfolio management. Before joining Zacco, he worked in-house as a senior patent attorney with Sony Mobile Communications. Mr Wässingbo was responsible for the global patent portfolio management and led a global patent group, working closely with team members in Sweden, the USA, Japan and China to focus on leveraging patent value and cross-purpose commercial viability. This included multiple areas within the IP field such as cross-licensing, IP sales, valuation, out-licensing and dispute resolution. Alongside his litigation support work, he regularly attends oral proceedings, oppositions, board of appeal work and examinations at the EPO and he has previously worked as a patent examiner at the Swedish Patent Office.

At Zacco, Mr Wässingbo works with patent drafting and prosecution, patent portfolio strategy work, patent risk assessment analysis, innovation and patent harvesting/mining. He is also responsible for business development within innovation assets, one of three business areas at Zacco.

Mr Wässingbo's time at Sony, and working with Zacco since, draws on his interest in technology and he enjoys working with the challenges presented by technological patenting. Having worked alongside telecommunications and software for over 20 years, he has contributed to the significant advances that have been made in both fields. Such advances include the digitalisation journey as such services branched out into diverse areas of automotive, software applications, user interfaces and wireless connectivity, alongside the more traditional manufacturing industry. More recently, his experience working within software, mobile telephony and connectivity has been integral to the support of a number of clients within autonomous vehicle development. Many companies are in the process of redefining the automotive sector through a combination of software, virtual engineering and modular development, and his clients have seen significant success in recent years, with Mr Wässingbo working alongside them almost from the beginning.
