Operating out of 22 offices across the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland, HGF is one of Europe’s major IP practices. The team in The Hague has seen considerable growth since it was established eight years ago, and most recently saw the arrival of Jessica Kroeze and Lewis Birchenough in 2021. Patent director Kroeze marries her PhD in chemical physics with her industry experience, to provide patrons in the chemical, oil and gas, and agrochemical space with counsel that both understands the science as well as the business implications. IAM Patent 1000 debutant Birchenough is an esteemed practitioner in the electronics field, specifically in the LTE and 5G arena, and is a familiar face before both local and European patent offices. At the helm of The Hague office is Achim Krebs, a trusted adviser to his clientele. They rely on him for straightforward counsel and thoughtful portfolio management.
Jessica Kroeze joined the Hague office of HGF as patent director in September 2021.
Her portfolio covers a wide range of chemical subjects, including physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, oil and gas, agrochemicals, nanotechnology and materials science. She handles all patent-related matters, including drafting and prosecution of patent applications before the EPO and the Dutch Patent Office, managing worldwide patent portfolios, strategic reviews, due diligence, and infringement and validity opinions. She also regularly represents clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO.
Dr Kroeze qualified as a Dutch and European patent attorney in 2010.
She holds an MSc in physical-organic chemistry from the University of Groningen and a PhD in chemical physics from Delft University of Technology (she won the DSM Award for the best PhD thesis). She has extensive academic experience as a researcher and assistant professor at Imperial College London and Eindhoven University of Technology. She also benefits from broad IP experience gained in both boutique and large private practice firms, as well as in industry managing several downstream processing and chemicals portfolios for a major gas and oil company.
Dr Kroeze spent several weeks as an intern at the EPO Board of Appeal. She regularly provides courses and tutorials to prepare aspiring patent attorneys for the European Qualifying Examination and has previously taught general IP workshops and patent formalities courses.
