The Patent 1000 focuses exclusively on patent practice and has firmly established itself as the definitive 'go-to' resource for those seeking world-class legal patent expertise.

Highly-recommended - Firms: prosecution

Silver - Firms: litigation

Pioneering boutique Rentsch Partner stands out from the crowd for its comprehensive approach to intellectual property. Combining the talents of both patent attorneys and lawyers under one roof, it can cover all bases for its high-flying technology and pharmaceutical clientele. The hardest hitters include Christian Hilti and Demian Stauber, who bring the heat in big-ticket litigation. A calm but commanding presence in the courtroom, Hilti has over three decades of experience and the market recognition to show for it, having chalked up many a landmark victory along the way. Stauber is lauded for his versatility: his sweet spot is at the confluence of IP, IT and contract law, where he crafts persuasive arguments for leading technology companies embroiled in disputes and assists small start-ups with their software agreements. On the prosecution front, Dany Vogel, Alfred Köpf, Louis Lagler and Andrea Carreira set the standard of excellence. Software instructions and computer-implemented inventions are meat and drink to the “super-sharp” Vogel; while Köpf devises “long-lasting and reliable strategies” in the life sciences and mechanical industries. An authority in the electrical and optical fields, Lagler “drafts patents efficiently and with a fantastic technical understanding, all while targeting a broad claim. He is responsive, reliable and great at coordinating multi-jurisdictional filings”. Joining them in the guide this year is Carreira, a prime choice for litigation support. The trained chemist relishes the nitty-gritty of complex matters and has the determination to take her cases all the way.

Andrea Carreira has 25 years of litigation and arbitration experience in the life sciences, in particular, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and related technologies. Founding partner Louis Lagler, primarily active in mechanics, injection moulding and computer aided design, was long-term chair of the Swiss Association of Patent and Trademark Attorneys. Maria Iskic counsels clients in complex contractual matters and represents them in arbitration and litigation proceedings. Alfred Köpf focuses on biotechnology, organic chemistry, medical technology and process technology. Dany Vogel has outstanding expertise in all patent-related aspects of computer software including digital signal, image and information processing, medical and control engineering, cryptography, blockchain, fintech and computer-implemented business methods. Christian Hilti is the firm’s elder statesman in patent litigation, as well as in IP contract law and arbitration.

Christian Hilti, Alfred Köpf and Dany Vogel are non-permanent judges of the Swiss Federal Patent Court, all elected by the Swiss Parliament in 2011. Demian Stauber, formerly Hauser Global Scholar at the New York University, is lecturer in internet law at the University of Zurich. Matthias Städeli is an experienced litigator and non-permanent judge at the Commercial Court of Zurich (IP chamber).

Patent prosecution and litigation

Our patent attorneys and attorneys at law provide support for technical innovations from the initial research stage to national and international registration and legal enforcement. Apart from non-litigious application and prosecution of industrial property rights, RENTSCH PARTNER handles and coordinates patent litigations, both in Switzerland and abroad, and has represented clients before the EPO for many years. The uniquely close factual and local collaboration of lawyers and professionals, with expertise in areas such as mechanical engineering, computer science, chemistry, biotechnology, materials science and electrical engineering, is unique for Switzerland and allows its clients to obtain comprehensive and interdisciplinary advice on complex legal and technical issues.

Technology law and digital economy

The firm has a dedicated group dealing with contracts and general terms and conditions, counselling and best practices, and litigation in the fields of IT, data protection and blockchain. For disruptive technologies, a multidisciplinary legal approach is required. RENTSCH PARTNER therefore created a team of specialists with backgrounds in regulation, tax, incorporation, intellectual property, technology and data protection.

Patent box

Matthias Städeli and Alfred Köpf are the helmsmen of the firm’s patent box team. Switzerland’s 2020 tax reform allows cantons to become more tax-competitive and innovation-friendly by giving companies tax breaks on income from IP rights. The idea is to promote research and development and incentivise innovative value creation. RENTSCH PARTNER is exclusive patent partner of Switzerland’s leading big four audit and advisory companies. In this unique partnership, RENTSCH PARTNER helps to make the most of the opportunities within the new legal framework of Switzerland’s tax regime.
