Arnold & Porter is the destination for many of the world’s top life sciences and technology companies. More than half of its attorneys hold degrees in engineering or scientific disciplines, and their expertise is put to good use in many high-stakes litigations. The focal point of the practice is IP co-chair Matthew Wolf, a pre-eminent trial lawyer with a stellar reputation in the industry. In one recent highlight, he secured a complete victory for Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals against Amgen in the district and appellate courts. Wolf works closely with Jennifer Sklenar, who, along with Wolf, was key in the Supreme Court victory on behalf of Hologic in 2021. The pair achieved yet another excellent result together recently, this time for Foundation Medicine, after the plaintiff Caris MPI voluntarily dismissed all five of its claims. Joining them on the litigation table this year is Ali Sharifahmadian, who is Samsung’s go-to contentious advocate. He has been busy supporting them in an infringement suit and concurrent IPR proceedings. Focusing on the non-contentious side of the practice is David Marsh. He provides strategic counselling, prosecution and post-grant support to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Bayer and Bruin Biometrics.

The UK patent practice of the American multinational firm Arnold & Porter is best known for the strength of its transactional offering, but the team also includes talented litigators and is well equipped to supply legal support across a range of IP issues. The transactional offering is fronted by Ewan Townsend. Patrons write: “I genuinely believe Ewan to be one of the most commercial and technically proficient commercial IP licensing lawyers in London, working in the biotech and pharma sectors. Not only is Ewan hugely pleasant to work with but he has a brilliant perception of the market and a forensic ability to work through drafting to ensure a client’s needs are appropriately captured and protected. Rarely do you find combined in one person such a strong commercial perspective and technical proficiency. Accordingly, I cannot recommend Ewan highly enough.” On the contentious side, the name to know is Beatriz San Martin. With a PhD and post-doctoral experience in genetics, cellular and molecular biology, San Martin is an obvious choice for companies in the life sciences space. Nevertheless, San Martin’s acumen extends beyond this sector, and she has also worked on cases involving everything from software and fintech to agrochemicals and mosquito nets. Recently, she has been cultivating significant experience in the cutting-edge gene therapy arena.
