In the Global Innovation Index 2021 rankings, Thailand is now ranked 43rd out of 132 countries, up one spot from the previous year. With innovation indices on the rise, the Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) is taking steps to remove Thailand from the United States Trade Representative’s watch list, where it was placed among 22 other countries. Until 2017, Thailand was on the priority watch list. The DIP is collaborating with US-affiliated agencies to devise a strategy to curb IP violations in the country. In mid-2021, the DIP announced that the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Act, which was originally passed in 2019, has been postponed and is now scheduled to come into power in June 2022. It aims to protect data privacy in digital spaces. Meanwhile, the new draft amendment of the Thai Patent Act is still undergoing revisions.
