While oil and gas still account for a substantial portion of the Norwegian economy, the key industry players are steadily moving towards alternative energy sources as part of the global shift towards renewable energy. As a result, offshore wind power and hydropower are the buzzwords of 2022, alongside fish farming and aquaculture, which also dominated the workloads of many of Norway’s IP practitioners. The pharmaceutical industry maintains its position as a key generator of contentious work, as a significant proportion of cases heard before the courts pertain to innovators and generics, and patent attorneys specialising in the life sciences have also been especially busy this year. Overall, the IP professionals in Norway are pleased with the vibrancy of the patent scene, the diversity of the workload and the increased willingness of inventors, SMEs and larger corporations to protect their intangible >assets.
