Although 2021 saw the continuation of the protests against President Ivan Duque which began in 2019, commercial interests in the country hope that the election in 2022 will bring stability and much-needed calm to both state and market. Duque’s relatively limited changes to Colombia’s laws have meant that prospective investors can count on no major surprises. The country continues to favour pro-innovation strategies to encourage entrepreneurship and start-ups, such as the much-lauded Rappi (founded 2015). The local government in Medellín, in particular, has been quite active in innovation investment. Traditionally, pharmaceuticals have dominated patent filings in Colombia, but recent years have witnessed an increasing uptick in software and cannabis products. Some have attributed this to an increase in the number of skilled patent examiners at the Colombian patent office. While patent litigation remains on the smaller side, it continues to grow and, as the list shows, there are plenty of strong firms available to assist in litigation as well as in prosecution and transactional issues.
