The Argentine patent and trademark office, the INPI, has dramatically improved its administration since all processes moved online as a result of the introduction of remote working during the pandemic. However, practitioners lament additional gaps within the country’s patent system, such as the lack of access to the PATENTSCOPE database for Patent Cooperation Treaty filings, which increases many firms’ overall workload. Life sciences is the most dominant field of patent practice in Argentina. However, this sector represents a particular challenge: the INPI allows only three strict categories for all pharmaceutical and chemical filings. Many practitioners therefore find it difficult to be persuasive in these cases, leading to a low rate of successful applications for inventions originating from international companies.
