Earlier this month, IAM reported patent assignments which indicate that Panasonic will part with around 1,400 US patents as part of the sale of its Semiconductor Solutions business. The portfolio represents a major acquisition for Taiwan-based Nuvoton, the subsidiary of Taiwanese chipmaker Winbond which agreed to buy the Panasonic business last December. This analysis by Cipher CEO Nigel Swycher, with data compiled by Cipher solutions analyst Kacper Gorski, sheds additional light on the portfolio's age, technical content and position in the competitive semiconductor space.
