Yoon Kang

Yoon Kang is a partner in Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office and plays a leading role in the firm’s life sciences litigation practice. For over 20 years, she has focused her practice on patent litigation and prosecution, counselling global pharmaceutical innovators and research institutions on all aspects of patent rights, including in small molecules and biologics inventions. She has significant experience as lead counsel, representing pharmaceutical clients before the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal in complex patent litigation, including under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations.

In 2018 Ms Kang was named “Best Lawyer in Life Sciences” in North America by Euromoney Legal Media Group at the Americas Women in Business Law Awards. In 2014 she was recognised as “Canadian Patent Non-contentious Attorney of the Year” by LMG Life Sciences. She is also listed as a top legal practitioner by Expert Guides: Women in Business Law, The Best Lawyers in Canada and Benchmark Canada.

Ms Kang is often invited to speak on topics in life sciences and IP law, including for the Life Sciences Patent Network and for the WIPR Influential Women in IP conferences. She is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, and a member and former co-chair of the Patents and Industrial Design Committee of the Canadian Bar Association. She is a registered patent and trademark agent and holds a bachelor’s in microbiology and genetics and a master’s in molecular biology and medical genetics.
