Sarah Roques

Partner at J A Kemp

Sarah Roques has over 25 years’ experience drafting, prosecuting and defending patents, primarily before the European Patent Office (EPO). She practises across a broad biotechnology subject-matter base, including sequencing technology, genetics, gene delivery, vaccines, antibodies, diagnostic markers, personalised medicine, pharmaceutical formulation, dosage regimens, research tools and mutant enzymes for cleantech applications.

Ms Roques has an extensive opposition practice, both defending and attacking, before the EPO Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal – notably on early cases relating to research tools such as polymerase chain reaction and more recently in relation to antibody therapeutics. She has also provided litigation support, particularly on cases where she has handled related oppositions at the EPO.

A substantial amount of Ms Roques’s work is for US companies and universities, both directly and through US attorney firms, prosecuting applications at the EPO and defending the resulting granted European patents in oppositions.

Her client base includes UK universities and technology transfer organisations. Ms Roques also acts for small and medium-sized companies in the United Kingdom and Sweden, providing advice on filing strategies, conducting portfolio reviews, drafting specifications and coordinating and managing foreign filings.

Ms Roques joined J A Kemp in 1997, after working in private practice elsewhere since 1990, and became a partner in 2002.
