Mohan Dewan is the principal of RK Dewan & Co. He has over 45 years’ professional experience and is arguably one of the most prominent IP figures in India.
Dr Dewan is a practising advocate and patent and trademark attorney. He has the unique distinction of being an exceptional litigator and an expert in patent and trademark prosecution.
Dr Dewan is a specialist in patent specification drafting, having obtained over 5,000 patents in multiple technology areas ranging from life sciences and pharmaceuticals to engineering, IT and computer-implemented systems. His firm represents over 4,000 clients worldwide, ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies.
Dr Dewan is actively involved in conducting anti-counterfeiting actions and litigating for clients across India in fields including interdisciplinary technologies, fast-moving consumer goods and luxury goods. He is an expert on the Madrid Protocol and advises clients on overcoming provisional refusals at Intellectual Property India. His areas of expertise extend to negotiating technology transfers and IP valuation. He also advises clients on complex contracts and service agreements, franchising and joint ventures.
He was head of the IP law department at Howard College, University of Natal, where he taught private international law (1988-1993). Dr Dewan is passionate about teaching intellectual property and conducts seminars for training patent office examiners, in-house counsel, research and development groups, senior management and students.
Dr Dewan has published several works. He co-authored Intellectual Property, Innovation and Management in Emerging Economies, which was launched at Warsaw University, Poland.
He regularly advises the Indian government, including the Defence and Information Technology Ministries and government institutions such as the National Research and Development Corporation of India.
He currently serves on the International Trademark Association (INTA) Bulletin Committee and has published numerous articles for the global IP community. Previously, he served on INTA’s Unreal Campaign Committee, Academic Committee and Emerging Issues Committee.
He has been recognised as a leading IP lawyer by various publications including Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, WTR 1000, IAM Patent 1000 and AsiaLaw Profiles.
