Mike Nicholls

Partner at J A Kemp

Mike Nicholls has over 30 years’ experience across the electrical, software and engineering fields for both foreign and UK companies. As a result of his work with the University of Oxford, he has been deeply involved in helping UK clients to develop patent portfolios in medical imaging, data processing (data fusion), e-health, patient monitoring and spectroscopy.

Mr Nicholls has international clients in the automotive, domestic appliance, optics and electronics fields. He also has responsibility for Japanese clients in the mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer software fields.

Mr Nicholls advises clients on freedom-to-operate matters, as well as enforcement, drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications at the European Patent Office and elsewhere. As a technology enthusiast who likes to see technology companies succeed, Mr Nicholls always tries to ensure that his clients understand what intellectual property can and cannot do for them and keep a commercial perspective on their patent expenditure. His aim is to give excellent practical and cost-effective advice, based on an understanding of the commercial goals of the client, rather than to pursue patents for their own sake.

Mr Nicholls joined J A Kemp in 1985 and became a partner in 1991.
