Matthew R Lynde heads Cornerstone Research’s IP practice. He has more than 35 years’ experience as an applied economist in government, academic and commercial environments. Dr Lynde’s work spans a range of domestic and international IP matters, with a focus on licensing and SEPs, valuation, commercialisation, lost profits and royalties for patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret causes of action.
A noted expert on the calculation of FRAND royalties for SEPs, Dr Lynde has testified in more than 65 instances, including numerous high-profile cases such as Microsoft v Motorola, Apple Inc v Amazon.com Inc and Bid for Position LLC v Google. These matters have mainly involved high-tech industries, particularly computer and telecommunications hardware and software, medical and military devices, and pharmaceutical and biotech products.
Dr Lynde speaks regularly on matters related to IP and patent law, including at annual gatherings such as the Berkeley-Stanford Advanced Patent Law Institute and the Sedona Conference. The National Law Journal named Dr Lynde as a trailblazer in the field of intellectual property, a lifetime achievement award that honours those who show “deep passion and perseverance” in their area of IP expertise. Originally trained in electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr Lynde has also served as a professor at City University of New York and a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he headed the firm’s Silicon Valley IP practice.
