Founding Partner at magellan IP
Leonor Magalhães Galvão started her career in intellectual property over 16 years ago at one of the most well-known and respected IP firms in Brazil. In 2015 she co-founded magellan IP, where she heads the firm’s patent prosecution and consultancy practice.
Dr Magalhães Galvão is one of Brazil’s most international IP professionals, having lived, studied and worked in three different countries. She received her BSc (first class honours) in biochemistry from the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine of the University of London and earned her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Sao Paulo. She was one of the first qualified patent attorneys in Brazil with a PhD in life sciences, which has enabled her to develop a prominent practice in the biotech and pharma fields.
Dr Magalhães Galvão represents a wide range of national and international clients, from academic institutions to multinational corporations, helping clients to devise the best strategies for the protection of their IP assets in Brazil and abroad, including drafting and prosecuting patents before the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office, carrying out patentability analysis and assisting with technology transfers, freedom-to-operate analysis, legal opinions, oppositions, appeal proceedings, litigation support and general consultancy in intellectual property.
Dr Magalhães Galvão specialises in chemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, immunology, medical devices and diagnostics, as well as pharmaceutical products. Dr Galvão also acts before the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency and on biodiversity matters and access to the Brazilian genetic patrimony, including acting on behalf of clients before the Genetic Patrimony Management Council.
Dr Magalhães Galvão chaired the Biotechnology Committee of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association for several years and is a permanent delegate of the Brazil Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property. She regularly presents to audiences around the world on a variety of topics regarding Brazilian patent law and practice.
