John Brunner

Partner at Carpmaels & Ransford LLP

John Brunner has extensive experience working in the technology sector for one of the largest IT and telecoms opposition practices in Europe. He has successfully led some of the most high-profile cases in this field before the EPO Boards of Appeal and Opposition Divisions.

Mr Brunner routinely obtains valuable patents for a variety of software and IT businesses. Recently, he has been brought in by clients working on AI-related technologies to build defensible patent portfolios in Europe. His other areas of expertise include the healthcare sector, particularly drug delivery systems, device fabrication and diagnostic devices. In these fields, Mr Brunner advises a range of companies, from start-ups to multinationals, on more general IP issues, including the infringement and enforcement of patents and design rights and licensing issues.

The prosecution of patent applications in Europe that read onto established industry standards requires particular experience. Mr Brunner’s experience with LTE, 3G, digital video broadcast and DDR (SDRAM), among others, highlights his outstanding ability to draft, prosecute and defend patents in Europe.

Mr Brunner is an Oxford University engineering graduate and a council member of the UK group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). He also sits on the AIPPI Programme Committee, providing input on IT-related patent topics. Before joining Carpmaels & Ransford, he worked for a leading technology product development consultancy in Cambridge.
