James H Patterson is a founding partner of Patterson Thuente IP. In his 30-plus years as a patent lawyer, his practice has encompassed all aspects of IP law, including patent prosecution, licensing, dispute mediation and litigation.

A recognised leader in the legal community, Mr Patterson works with mid-size and large regional technology companies, as well as Fortune Global 500 and FTSE 100 corporations, providing them with senior-level strategic counsel and ensuring that their patent dollars are spent wisely. His work for clients, both domestic and international, includes:

  • patent prosecution;
  • IP portfolio management;
  • competitive analysis;
  • offensive and defensive strategy development;
  • freedom-to-operate opinions;
  • clearance searches;
  • enforcement strategy and analysis;
  • global market-protection strategies; and
  • inventor issue resolution.

Mr Patterson also has trial experience in state and federal courts and has served as an expert witness in US and European cases. He was sole arbiter of a patent infringement case involving seven patents.

As a leader and mentor within the firm, Mr Patterson imposes a client-first philosophy, emphasising quality work, responsiveness and teamwork.

Access to justice has been an important part of Mr Patterson’s career. He was instrumental in not only developing the first pro bono patent law programme in the United States, but also in providing start-up guidance to patent pro bono programmes across the country and internationally. He is chair of the America Invents Act Pro Bono Advisory Council and is a liaison to the World Intellectual Property Organisation Inventor Assistance Programme, an initiative in cooperation with the World Economic Forum that is matching inventors and small businesses with pro bono legal assistance on a global scale.

Mr Patterson is also a founding officer of the Honourable Jimmie V Reyna Intellectual Property Inn of Court, serves on the board of directors of the United Inventors Association and is a member of the Mitchell Hamline School of Law Intellectual Property Law Institute advisory board.
