Managing Director at Stout
David Haas is a managing director in the dispute consulting group at Stout and leads the firm’s Chicago IP practice. With a background in engineering (two degrees as well as prior work experience) and more than 30 years’ experience in IP damages determination, Mr Haas is uniquely skilled in his ability to understand and communicate damages concepts relating to complex technology. He has served as a damages expert witness in a wide array of IP litigation matters, including patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright disputes. He has testified in federal district courts on more than 20 occasions and has also testified in the state courts and in arbitrations on issues including lost profits, reasonable royalties, unjust enrichment, price erosion, prejudgment interest and other compensation topics, including determination of incremental costs, market share and manufacturing and marketing capacity.
Mr Haas also has experience in determining the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property, for a variety of purposes, including licensing, M&A, technology management and commercialisation and tax planning.
Mr Haas has written articles and made presentations to numerous professional groups on topics including IP damages determination, damages discovery and trial presentation, intangible asset valuation and IP licensing. Mr Haas has also been asked to speak and write about his experience in using web analytics and social media data in IP disputes and valuation assignments. From 2000 to 2014, he was an adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School, where he taught an annual course in IP valuation.
