At van Rooy is patent director at KISCH IP, where he is also head of the patent department and chair of the executive committee. He has a BSc in chemistry and biochemistry and has obtained a BProc. He is admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and is a registered patent attorney.
Mr van Rooy specialises in patent specification drafting, patent prosecution and patent litigation. His technical areas of expertise include plant breeders’ rights and plant variety protection and litigation. He has a wealth of experience in prosecuting patent applications through the main patent offices of the world. He also deals with IP law and IP auditing, copyright litigation and contracts.

Mr van Rooy’s technical expertise includes the fields of life sciences, pharmaceuticals, veterinary sciences, medical sciences, biotech, biochemical sciences and microbiological sciences. He has particular expertise in plant breeders’ rights and genetically modified organisms, product liability and mitigation of risk and damages, copyright litigation and contracts and registered designs. He has specialist skills in patent, plant breeders’ rights, genetically modified organism and product liability litigation, the drafting of portfolio agreements for multinational corporations, IP auditing of complex corporate structures and patent prosecution in a wide variety of jurisdictions and fields of technology.
Mr van Rooy is a fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law and a past president of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys, among other industry associations.
