Partner at HOFFMANN EITLE

Andreas Stefferl is a partner in HOFFMANN EITLE’s biotechnology group. He joined the firm in 2003 and is qualified as a European and German patent attorney. Dr Stefferl studied biology at the University of Vienna and the University of Manchester and completed his diploma thesis in 1995. He wrote his doctoral thesis in the fields of neuroimmunology and neuroendocrinology of inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system – particularly multiple sclerosis – at the Max Planck Institutes for Psychiatry and Neurobiology. In 2000 Dr Stefferl started working as a postdoctoral associate in the research department of the University of Vienna. He gathered further work experience as an analyst in a rating agency and as an investment manager of a venture capital firm with a focus on biotechnology start-up firms.

Dr Stefferl performs examination proceedings and contentious proceedings before the EPO and advises clients in front of the German courts in infringement and nullity cases. Opinion work relating to patentability, validity or infringement is also part of Dr Stefferl’s daily work.

Dr Stefferl has a strong client base in both Europe and Japan, where he travels on a regular basis to advise his clients in face-to-face meetings. He handles many cases relating to antibodies as pharmaceutically active agents, fermentative processes for the generation of fine chemicals, enzymes and medicinal technology or diagnosis, particularly in the field of blood analysis. Several infringement cases have a focus on fermentative production processes and include forensic analysis of fine chemicals to ascertain details of the production process. Dr Stefferl handles a broad spectrum of regenerative medicine-related applications and was involved in the prosecution of the ‘Yamanaka factors’ for generating induced pluripotent stem cells before the EPO.

In addition to his file-related work, Dr Stefferl frequently presents at conferences, including the annual Comparative Patent Practice Conference and the Japan IP Association. He contributes articles to various journals, including Patents & Licensing and Going Public Magazine.
