Anabela Carvalho

Anabela Carvalho is a qualified European patent attorney (European Patent Office (EPO)), a Portuguese patent and trademark attorney (Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property), a Portuguese industrial property agent and a European trademark and design attorney (EU Intellectual Property Office). She is also a patent arbitrator.

Ms Carvalho qualified as a European patent attorney in 2013 and was one of the first professionals in Portugal to pass the European qualifying examination.

Ms Carvalho has a bioengineering degree from the University of Minho, Portugal. She is a partner at PATENTREE (also known as PATENTS.PT).

She began her career in the biotech laboratory of Gist-Brocades (DSM) in 1998 and subsequently had project manager duties at Associação Empresarial de Portugal in the IP and technology transfer office. In 2004 Ms Carvalho joined a multinational IP group, where she was subsequently director of the Porto bureau for seven years.

Ms Carvalho has helped clients extensively in the development of strategies and solutions for patent and IP management (advanced and defensive patent filings). She has comprehensive patent prosecution experience in European, Patent Cooperation Treaty and Portuguese patent applications, including providing opinions and analysis on patentability, freedom-to-operate and infringement matters. She also has experience as a judicial patent expert appointed both by the courts and by parties.

Ms Carvalho has interned with the EPO Examining Division and is a tutor at the University of Strasbourg Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies on the Lisbon European patent law course and at the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO.

She speaks fluent Portuguese, English and Spanish.
