Allan Brett is head of the electrical, electronic engineering and computer sciences practice at Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office. Drawing from his professional experience as an engineer and software developer for leading technology companies, he drafts and prosecute patent applications for innovative electrical, electronic and computer-related inventions in Canada and around the world.

Over the course of his 20-year legal career, Mr Brett has spear-headed more than 200 originating patent applications and is often sought out by top global innovators to safeguard their IP interests. In addition, his drafting and patenting of technology has contributed to one of the largest technology deals in Canadian history. Mr Brett excels in offering strategic advice on IP portfolio development, management and utilisation. His track record includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a range of leading technologies, such as communications, semiconductors, memory systems, optical systems, software and business methods.

Mr Brett is listed in Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Expert Guides: Patents, and he has been recognised annually in The Best Lawyers in Canada and Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars Handbook: Patents since 2014 and in The Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory since 2015. He holds a bachelor’s in mathematics and electrical engineering and a master’s in electrical engineering from Queen’s University. Mr Brett is also a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys and the Canadian Intellectual Property Association.
