The growing economic crisis was a major concern during the Spanish general election campaign in early 2008. There was fierce debate as to how severe the problems were, whether the crisis was caused by the international situation and whether local aspects could worsen the Spanish recession. Following the general election on March 9 2008, the Socialist Party remained in power.
