Senior Director, IP Strategy at Huawei Device USA
Tao Zhang is senior director of IP strategy at Huawei Device USA. Her main responsibilities include external IP transactions such as patent acquisitions and patent sales, internal strategic patent portfolio development and select litigation support. Ms Zhang is passionate about improving patent quality and diligently explores related methodologies and processes.
Before joining Huawei in 2012, Ms Zhang was with Hewlett-Packard (HP) for 23 years. She began her career at HP as an R&D engineer, then moved on to programme management, people management and was director of IP licensing from 2004 to 2012. She also led HP’s online patent sales, storage patent licensing and HP Labs technology transfer.
Ms Zhang holds a PhD in physics from Stanford University and a JD from Concord Law School. She is a member of the California Bar and a registered patent attorney with the US Patent and Trademark Office. She is also co-author of four US-granted patents. In addition, Ms Zhang is author of the book Mining Ideas for Diamonds – Comparing China and US IP Practices from Invention Selection to Patent Monetization, which is being translated into Chinese for publication in China. She also authored the article “Call for Standardization in Patent Claim Drafting”, Santa Clara High Tech Law Journal, Volume 34, Issue 3 (April 2018). Ms Zhang was recognised by the IAM Strategy 300 in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
