Helga Chapman is the founder and managing director of Chapman IP, a specialist firm comprising UK, German and European patent attorneys, trademark attorneys and IP strategists. Ms Chapman’s expertise lies in the technical areas of engineering, aerospace, electronics, materials science and IP due diligence. She represents large multinational corporations in all aspects of IP matters and works alongside smaller high-tech spin-outs. In all cases, the ethos of providing commercial solutions and adding value to the business is core to her advice. She drives to capitalise on the value of intellectual property in the context of transactions, corporate valuations and strategic decision making.
In addition to her experience in obtaining, defending and opposing patents at the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office, Ms Chapman is involved in a diverse mix of commercial disputes and successfully advises on commercially advantageous settlements.
Before founding Chapman IP in 2002, Ms Chapman worked in-house at Rolls-Royce plc, acting as lead patent counsel in the technical field of combustion engineering. She developed Chapman IP through rapid growth, and the firm is now an established, respected practice with over 20 IP staff, including IP specialist lawyers. Its UK offices are in Southampton and Cardiff, and it has a staffed office in Munich.
Ms Chapman has significant experience advising on IP portfolio management, with a number of clients undertaking large filing programmes across the globe. She has been highly successful in obtaining valuable patents for her clients which cover a wide spectrum of commercial activity, including one of the world’s largest materials science companies.
Ms Chapman has been recognised by the Legal 500 as “consistently exceeding clients’ expectations, especially in terms of providing practical, business-driven advice”. Ms Chapman is a European patent attorney, chartered UK patent attorney, European trademark attorney and an active fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys. She also has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Leeds.
