François Painchaud specialises in business law applied to key technology sectors. He is frequently involved in drafting and negotiating complex transactions relating to technology transfers and joint ventures and in commercial and corporate law, including venture capital, the establishment of consortiums and M&A.
Mr Painchaud was named lawyer of the year in 2014 (information technology, Montreal) by Best Lawyers and technology transfer lawyer of the year (Canada) at the Corporate Intl magazine Global Awards. Called to the Quebec Bar in 1986, Mr Painchaud has been a partner at ROBIC for more than 25 years. He is a member of the firm’s management committee and heads its business law group.
He is a past president of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) United States and Canada and was a member of the board of directors from 2001 to 2010. Since 2011 he has been counsel, corporate secretary and a member of the board of LES International (LESI), and from May 2018 he will be LESI president. He is also a director of the Canada-based Cancer Research Society.
Mr Painchaud serves on the board of directors or as corporate secretary of various private and public companies operating in life sciences and other technology-driven fields. From April 2018 he will be a member of the board of directors of Searchlight Pharma Inc, a Canadian-based specialty pharmaceutical company. He is corporate secretary of the Quebec Consortium for Drug Discovery and the NeoMed Institute. He was director and secretary of Axcan Pharma Inc until March 2008, when it became a closed society in what was the biggest life sciences buy-out on the Canadian stock market at the time.
Mr Painchaud is frequently solicited to give lectures on various areas of technology transfer and intellectual property in commercial transactions for several business groups and associations. He also regularly publishes articles in his fields of specialisation.
