Joachim Renken


Joachim Renken is partner of HOFFMANN EITLE’s biotechnology group in Munich and head of the firm’s Madrid office.

Dr Renken is particularly active in the life sciences, with expertise in patent work in a wide variety of technical areas within biotechnology and chemistry – in particular, antibodies, cancer diagnostics and therapies, purification methods, medicinal and organic chemistry, surfactants and cosmetics. He is very experienced in European Patent Office proceedings, mainly in oppositions and appeals. He also regularly provides strategic advice and represents clients in nullity actions before the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice. He is also involved in patent infringement proceedings and provides validity and non-infringement opinions as well as due diligence evaluations.

In addition to his case work, Dr Renken frequently speaks at patent law seminars, in cooperation with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, among others. He is co-editor of the book The European Patent Convention for Japanese Practitioners.

Dr Renken studied chemistry at the Universities of Aachen, Montpellier and Heidelberg and completed his PhD at the University of Heidelberg in the field of biophysical chemistry. He joined HOFFMANN EITLE in 1996, qualifying as a German patent attorney in 2000 and as a European patent attorney in 2001.

Dr Renken is fluent in German, English and Spanish.
