Garrard R Beeney

Garrard R Beeney is co-head of Sullivan & Cromwell’s IP and technology group and a member of the firm’s managing partners committee. Mr Beeney has been inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was counsel in the two major patent cases before the US Supreme Court in 2016.

Mr Beeney has litigated IP and licensing cases throughout the country in federal and state courts. Mr Beeney also represents clients before US, European and Asian competition law authorities, particularly in the intersection between IP and competition laws. Mr Beeney has also argued appellate cases in various courts, including in the US Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit and the Second Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the Arkansas and Nebraska Supreme Courts. He represents plaintiffs and defendants in infringement actions and advises plaintiffs on patent selection in pre-suit due diligence. Mr Beeney also frequently advises on licensing issues and IP monetisation and has represented patent owners in multiple licensing pools, including those related to AAC, AVC, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVB-T, LTE, ATSC, VC-9, IEEE 1394 and other technologies.

Mr Beeney is regularly recognised as a leading lawyer in the IP and antitrust fields, among others, by leading industry publications, including The Best Lawyers in America, Forbes, IAM, Law360, The Legal 500 United States and New York Super Lawyers. In addition, The American Lawyer has recognised him twice as litigator of the week.

Mr Beeney’s public service includes having served for over a decade as the deputy mayor of Irvington, New York. He has served as chair of the board of Mercado Global, a non-profit organisation working to improve the lives of impoverished artisans in Central America, and sits on the boards of several not-for-profit organisations. He also represents clients in pro bono litigation, including in a recent successful First Amendment trial and matters involving child adoptions in Arkansas and Nebraska, in which he successfully argued issues before both states’ supreme courts.
