Villaraza & Angangco
Villaraza & Angangco’s (V&A Law) IP department is composed of highly competent and motivated individuals, each with a dynamic and broad skillset. The department has nine lawyers, four paralegals and two assistants, and is broadly supported by the firm’s non-legal personnel for its docketing and document preparation requirements. The lawyers have diverse backgrounds in science, medicine, political science, media and even fashion, and have vast industry experience, which enables them to provide services that are multi-disciplinary and specifically tailored to clients’ individual IP needs. The department handles the full gamut of IP rights matters, from traditional patent and trademark prosecution, copyright deposit, inter partes cases, administrative, civil and criminal litigation of IP rights violations and IP rights enforcement programmes to IP commercialisation, licensing and franchising, border control measures and regulatory advice for industries such as pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, technology-based logistics services, media, entertainment, broadcasting and over-the-top or internet-based services.
V&A Law’s patent practice is led by lawyers who have technical know-how essential to prosecuting and defending national and Patent Cooperation Treaty applications and covering diverse subject matters such as microbiology, virology, immunology, biotechnology, DNA technology, applied chemistry, pharmaceutical products, applied physics, instrumentation, and information technology. Our patent lawyers have degrees in molecular biology, biotechnology, medicine, applied physics and computer science, and this understanding of various technologies gives them the competence and capability to, among others, assist in the drafting and amending of patent specifications and claims, perform freedom-to-operate and patentability searches and analyses, and represent clients in patent cancellation/invalidation and infringement cases. V&A Law also handles applications before the Food and Drug Administration for product registration and the issuance of licences to operate in connection with food, natural supplements and pharmaceutical products.
The firm is also proud of its IP litigation practice, which covers regular court and administrative litigation for both inter partes and IP rights violation cases. Unlike other full-service law firms, which refer their IP litigation matters to their general litigation departments, V&A’s IP department has the expertise and experience to handle all its litigation itself. By optimising its lawyers’ technical and legal expertise in relation to IP litigation cases, the firm is able to provide more specialised, IP-focused and effective service to its IP litigation clients. Consequently, the firm’s IP litigation practice is highly regarded, particularly for trademark and patent cancellation, trademark infringement and unfair competition cases, as evidenced by the department’s track record for big-ticket litigation matters for some of the major players in the Philippines.
In addition to its excellence in providing IP litigation services, V&A’s IP department handles large amounts of IP prosecution work. The firm represents some of the country’s leading companies, as well as several small and medium enterprises, in their IP concerns. The firm also leads the pace in Philippine IP law practice with its outbound filings through the Madrid Protocol, as well as domain name registration and audits for the protection of trademarks in cyberspace. Despite high-volume filings, V&A Law’s IP department is known and recognised for its speed, accuracy and efficiency in IP prosecution, which stems from its highly systematic and team-centred handling of cases.
Both clients and peers recognise the excellence of V&A’s IP practice. The practice is thus consistently ranked in the top tier by various specialist publications such as the World Trademark Review, Asian Legal Business, The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. V&A Law was ranked Band 3 in 2016 and 2017 and Band 2 in 2018 and 2019 in the Chambers and Partners Asia Pacific Guide for Intellectual Property; Tier 1 for Intellectual Property in 2016 to 2019 by The Legal 500 Asia-Pacific; Bronze Band from 2016 to 2019 by the World Trademark Review; and Tier 1 for Patents/Trademarks/Copyright in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Asian Legal Business Rankings. V&A Law is also a recommended firm for intellectual property in the 2019 Asialaw rankings for law firms based in the Philippines.
