Kather Augenstein Rechtsanwälte PartGmbB

Kather Augenstein is a boutique law firm with a team of 13 specialised lawyers based in Dusseldorf, Germany. The firm was established in 2016 after a spin-off from Preu Bohlig as Kather Augenstein’s members wanted to focus on what they know best: IP litigation. They relish the challenging cases. Their passion is to disentangle complex situations, decipher apparently contradictory facts and get to the root of a problem. They delve into the matter and never give up. Because of that, all of Kather Augenstein’s clients joined at its inception and the firm has since been able to win a large number of new clients.

The team has been working together for many years and combines its experience and knowledge in IP litigation. In the last year, Kather Augenstein has welcomed three new associates to its team, two young professionals and one two-year associate. The Kather Augenstein team now comprises six partners - the most recent of which is Sören Dahm - six associates and one of counsel lawyer, and communicates with clients in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Areas of specialism

Kather Augenstein’s work focuses on patents, trademarks, designs and unfair competition. The lawyers enforce IP rights in all technical areas, including telecommunications, automotive, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, bio-technology, nano-technology, engineering and chemistry. Due to its size, the team is extremely flexible and gives full attention to each mandate – something all clients can rely on. Kather Augenstein works exclusively in litigation as the team prefers contentious disputes and overarching coordination – national and international. Further, the team has extensive experience with arbitration. The lawyers are regularly nominated as arbitrators and are thus familiar with the other side of the bench.

The team can handle comprehensive and complex litigation cases by joining forces and knowledge. Last year, Kather Augenstein represented Audi AG and Volkswagen AG in a dispute in relation to connected cars against Avago and Broadcom and handled the coordination of a total of 13 proceedings. This is the kind of work at which Kather Augenstein excels.

Partner Christopher Weber continues to act for mid-cap and international clients in all technological fields. In two current cases he secures the IP of a well-funded Asian start-up in the pre-IPO phase against fast-followers and defends a leading international pharma company in a multi-jurisdictional case. For international legal disputes, the lawyers work seamlessly with similarly experienced firms around the world and have vast experience in coordinating international legal disputes for their clients as intellectual property does not stop at national borders. Partner Alexander Haertel is currently leading cross-border infringement proceedings in Italy, Germany and the United States, and works closely with patent attorneys in all three countries. He is also responsible for internal and external coordination.

As of its inception, Kather Augenstein has been listed as a recommended firm in national and international rankings such as Juve, The Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, IAM, IP Stars, Kanzleienliste 2018, Who’s Who Legal and Leaders League Group, among others. Further, Kather Augenstein’s lawyers regularly speak at conferences, take part in panel discussions and have their work published in law journals.
